Messi is actually a central figure in Argentina's breakthrough to the 2018 World Cup group round.
He scored a hat-trick against Ecuador in the last game of the 2018 World Cup qualifying zone in South America or Conmebol.
But Messi's appearance in the 2018 World Cup was precisely anticlimax with yet to score a goal at all.
